Library Renovation Project Update

The Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System continues to make progress on the Library Building Program and has begun Phase II of the plan and the renovation of 23 library branches, including the system's downtown Atlanta Headquarters, Central Library. The renovation project is expected to take place through late 2020.  

Below is a list of each of the libraries being renovated, broken down into groups. The groups were created to streamline the process and in no way indicate an order of how the libraries will be renovated. The groups below may run concurrently, once construction begins, depending on the needs of the library system and the communities each library serves. 

Group 1

Update on selected vendors and public meetings:

  • A contract has been awarded to Hogan Construction.
  • Public meetings were held for each of the seven branches in Group 1.
  • The design team is in the final stages of designing this group of libraries.
  • Renovations tenatively scheduled to begin in January or February 2018.

Libraries included in Group 1:

  • Roswell
  • Sandy Springs
  • Kirkwood
  • Southwest Atlanta
  • Dogwood
  • Washington Park
  • West End

Next Steps: 

A second round of public meetings (dates TBD)  will be held later this year to share designs with the public and gain further community feedback before moving forward with construction. 

Group 2

Update on selected vendors and public meetings:

  • A contract has been awarded to EDT.
  • Group 2 is in the initial design phase.
  • Renovations are expected to begin in the second quarter of 2018.

Libraries included in Group 2:

  • Ocee
  • Northeast/Spruill Oaks
  • Northside
  • Mechanicsville
  • Buckhead

Next Steps: 

Public meetings will be scheduled for the Group 2 libraries in the coming weeks to gather community input and recommendations for the construction/design team. 

Group 3

Update on selected vendors and public meetings:

  • RFP for Group 3 is currently out for bid.
  • Bids are due in mid-August 2017.
  • Renovations are expected to begin after summer of 2018.

  • Adams Park
  • Adamsville-Collier Heights
  • Cleveland Avenue
  • Ponce de Leon
  • College Park
  • East Atlanta

 Group 4

 Update on selected vendors and public meetings:

  • A contract has been awarded to BuildSmart/Tebarco.
  • Initial Design Phase of the project has begun.
  • Renovations are expected to being in the second quarter of 2018.

Public meetings have been held in order to gather input.  A second round of public meetings (dates TBD)  will be held later this year to share designs with the public and gain further community feedback before moving forward with construction. 

Independent Renovations

  • Hapeville Library
    • Renovated independently, no other branches involved.
    • RFP has not been released as of 8/1/17
    • RFP to be released in late 2017.
  • Central Library/System Headquarters
    • Renovated independently, no other branches involved.
    • A contract for design and bridging documents has been awarded to Cooper Carry.
    • Initial Design Phase of the project has begun.
    • Renovations are expected to begin in the fall of 2018.
    • Public Meetings have been scheduled to gather community input on the Central Library renovation.  Click here for a full list of meetings.

Remodel Projects (leased facilities):

  • Peachtree Library
    • Remodeled internally
    • No timeline established as of 8/1/17
  • MLK Library
    • Remodeled internally
