"We the People” Grant and New Books Collection at Southwest Branch

Atlanta – The Southwest Branch of the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System received a prestigious “We the People” Bookshelf grant, which gave the library a collection of classic books for young readers and program. This is a project of the National Endowment for the Humanities’ (NEH) We the People program, conducted in cooperation with the American Library Association (ALA) Public Programs Office.

The Southwest Branch’s program, “Harriet Tubman and Sojourner Truth, an Acting Portrayal by storyteller Sister Yomi” will take place on Tuesday, February 17 at 6:30 p.m.

We the People is designed to encourage and enhance the teaching, study and understanding of American history, culture, and democratic principles. NEH was founded on the belief that cultivating the best of the humanities has real and tangible benefits for civic life. Through We the People, NEH has rededicated itself to this mission, and is leading a renaissance in knowledge about American history and principles among all our citizens.

The American Library Association (ALA) collaborates with NEH to deliver this program. ALA staff and libraries help to select the books, and work directly with the nation's libraries to disseminate information and to encourage libraries to take part in the "We the People Bookshelf" grant program.
