Internship Program Objective and Strategies: The program objective is to provide interns an introductory knowledge of the function and fundamentals of archives through observation and hands-on experience. The internship program meets this objective through a number of strategies. Interns 1) study the role and function of archives within the setting of a research library in a public library system; 2) develop research skills related to identifying irreplaceable and unique archival material; 3) learn about donor relations activities directly related to collection development; 4) observe and engage in activities related to basic collection processing and preservation according to best practices and standards; and 5) observe and engage in activities related to creating finding aids and other inventories using nationally accepted descriptive standards.
Qualifications: Interns must be enrolled in an approved course at a partnering academic institution, have working knowledge of Microsoft Office Word, be reliable, have good communication skills, and be able to lift materials weighing up to 20 pounds. Internship hours: Amount stipulated by host academic program. Schedules are negotiated between the coordinator and interns and adhere to AARL’s hours of operation.
Library Hours: Monday-Thursday, 10:00 am to 8:00 pm
Friday and Saturday, 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm
Sunday, 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm
