Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System Launches New “Virtual Book Club” Initiative in Collaboration with American Library Association’s Book Club Central and Honorary Chair Sarah Jessica Parker

Atlanta, GA – The Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System (AFPLS) is joining the virtual book club world, in collaboration with the American Library Association’s Book Club Central, a new online platform for reading resources, including recommendations, expert book lists and other content for book clubs and their readers.  Award-winning television and film actor, producer, designer, library supporter and avid reader Sarah Jessica Parker is partnering with the ALA to serve as the Honorary Chair of Book Club Central.

As Honorary Chair, Ms. Parker will provide a selection of recommended titles for Book Club Central throughout the year. She unveiled her inaugural pick at the official launch of Book Club Central, this summer at ALA’s Annual Conference in Chicago. Parker’s first selection is “No One Is Coming to Save Us,” by Stephanie Powell Watts, published by Ecco/an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers.

Ms. Parker stated, “’No One Is Coming to Save Us’ marks the arrival of a wonderfully gifted new American writer. JJ, Ava and Sylvia are easy characters to fall in love with, and Stephanie Powell Watts brings them to life with warmth and generosity. I can't wait to share their story, their search for fulfillment and attempts to better understand their past and shape their future, with readers everywhere, and I'm jealous of all who will open to page one for the first time.”  Her next pick will be announced later this fall.

“No One Is Coming to Save Us” is an exploration of the American Dream among African Americans in the South. A story about the ghosts of the past and departed, as well as the lives of the living, the novel is a complex, post-integrationist tale that charts new territory.

AFPLS will launch its first Virtual Book Club today, September 1, 2017 with a Facebook group dedicated to resources for checking out the book selection, both digitally and in hard copy at your local library, along with six librarian “book club moderators” who will engage with participants throughout the two-month virtual book club period. Participants will also be treated to a special "welcome message" from Author Stephanie Powell Watts, upon joining the virtual book club.  Library patrons are encouraged to join the online group of book lovers by visiting  https://www.facebook.com/groups/AFPLSvirtualbookclub/ and joining the open group discussion.

Library card holders can reserve a copy of “No One is Coming to Save Us” on the library’s website, www.afpls.org. E-book readers can download a copy of the book using the system’s Overdrive app.
